I purchased a 1930 eastern carbine 94 yesterday with serial number 1071107 and it has a type 1 carbine butt plate. I read in perkles book that butt plates changed on the 94 around that time (@ circa 1050000). Since the numbers are fairly close in range I assume there was a period in time when they just used up current stock and continued to sell both.
My question is did they continue selling type 1 plates in special orders or were they fully phased out around that period? Wondering if anyone knows?
Thank you,
Hello Brian,
In regards to when & what butt plates Winchester used on the Carbines, Art Pirkle quite frankly did not know what he was talking about. Winchester used the carbine style (type 1) butt plate as the standard part through the May, 1937 (circa serial number 1129550). Special order shotgun butt plates were available (four different types), a black hard rubber BP, a checkered steel BP (like an early Model 70), a smooth steel BP, and a serrated steel BP (like those used on the Models 53, 54, and 55). The serrated steel butt plate replaced the carbine butt plate as standard beginning in June 1937 (circa serial number 1129600). There were a small number of the serrated steel butt plates used beginning in late 1936, but the bulk of the Model 94 Carbines were still equipped with the old style (type 1) butt plates until the end of May, 1937.
