So as I was painting ceilings today, and had to much time on my hands. I started to think. How many cartridges/ calibers have been derived from two of the most venerable cartridges I can think of. That being the 45-70 and the 30-06. Like I said, don’t let me think!
Thinking not required; Barne’s Cartridges of the World will do the thinking for you.

Tom – back in my wildcat cartridge rifle days, I had an 8mm-06 Improved and an 8mm Gibbs. Do those count?

Well the 45 Government has such a long history and is so versatile that it has derived so many. Can be used easily to make other cartridges.
The 30Gov.1906 was derived from the 30Gov.1903 cartridge. So what cartridge derived the following cartridges?
Both are such awesome cartridges, I use both regularly.
I do wonder how truly answerable your question is though.
Sincerely,
Maverick

I like to keep it a bit simpler, say cartridges derived from the 38-55. It’s a more manageable group and cartridges I enjoy loading and shooting. The 30-06 is indeed mind-boggling but the 45-70 lineage is an impressive lineup after you think about it awhile.

I was afraid the off spring of these two cartridges would be mind boggling. The 30-06 just seems to offer itself to wild catting and the 45-70 with a rimmed case just says “find me a lever gun”, and a guy to neck it down and sprinkle a bit of magic powder and you got another excellent cartridge.

Cool thing about the 45-70 is you have quite a family with all the different lengths before you start messing with tapers and shoulders. The 30GOVT06 is a different matter, it’s all about the tapers, shoulders and bullet diameters. IMHO they got it right to begin with but the offspring have been interesting.
