Buffalo arms sells repo rods and I thought they were exact copies of the originals.

I have bought these for several years, they are exact copies. With a little aging it’s hard to tell them from originals. Most of the so called originals in guns and for sale used are these repro rods. I won’t pay more than $50 for a set of original rods because of these repro rods. T/R

TR, I agree.  It took some years but the repos are just like the real ones.

I was looking through the McCraken Research on the 73 yesterday and spotted some information on sample parts that points to that they must of had thought about producing jointed cleaning rods for the 32 WCF. The rod was smaller in diameter.

I was going through the 1920 Win catalog and they list the wooden handle rods.

Just to add some additional information to this topic…

This is a scanned copy of the April 1900 Catalog No. 65.  Read the last sentence on the page where it states that all Model 1892 guns would be supplied with a slotted hickory rod.

It is interesting that in the Model 1892 ledgers there are notations as early as SN 37352 and afterwards for “Rod in Butt”  They are all 44 WCF sporting rifles.

It does not surprise me that at least a few discerning buyers wanted the same cleaning rod type that was standard on the Model 1873.  I know that if I would have ordered a Model 1892 back in the day, I too would have ordered it with a trap-door butt and steel jointed cleaning rod.

Tim Tomlinson said that his son “has a model 1892 in .32 WCF that came with its original hickory wiping rod.  It is an unjointed, one piece rod”

I wonder if Tim could ask his son to measure the rod and compare the measurements to mine.

I really thank Maverick for producing the evidence that one piece hickory wiping rods were supplied with the Model 1892.

Oh boy am I late to this party.

The cleaning rod is exactly 30″ long, has a butt diameter of 0.274″ tapering consistently to 0.265″ at the 15″ mark and 0.260″ just ahead of the flat for the cleaning eye, 0.261″ at the widest spot of the eye, and has a noticeable bow in it likely from its prolonged storage in that PVC tube.  Given its age I’m unwilling to test its flexibility.  It is solid wood with no metal components, joints, or markings anywhere on it, and has an oil finish similar to period gunstocks and is a rich reddish-brown.

Hi 1873 man

Are they wooden?

Could you upload a photo/copy of the page so we can see what they look like.
