Henry,
Just for my own American curiosity, which date holds more meaning in Canada?
17 April 1982
11 December 1931
1 July 1867
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. My great state of Louisiana wouldn’t be what it is today without the “Le Grand Dérangement” from August 10, 1755 to July 11, 1764.

I think July 1 has the most meaning simply because it is celebrated as Canada Day or as it used to be called Dominion Day. Like your 4th of July it is the most recognized as a holiday in the summer with special events and usually fireworks. The importance of the Statute of Westminster of 1931 is really only recognized by a few with interest in our history but important for our country as well. For Indiginous and Metis people the 1982 Constitution is probably the most important day to celebrate as it affirmed and recognized their treaty rights.
.I am one Canadian who feels that the dates April 9-12, 1917 are as important as any in Canadian history. These were the days when all 4 divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force aided by British artillery for the first time united attacked and routed 3 divisions of German defenders from Vimy Ridge. The French and British had previously failed to take this important stronghold .Brig-Gen A.E. Ross commented after the war that “in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.”
Happy 4th of July to our American friends and neighbours. We share the lie longest undefended border in the world and this is a testament to our enduring trust and common ideals even during this time of political and social unrest.
Indeed the expulsion of the Acadians in 1775 was Canada’s loss and Louisiana’s gain although we still have a thriving Acadia population in the Maritimes.
Ya Maverick, Like Dave said July 1st is the most recognized of all the important dates in Canada, and there are many. Nov. 11, Rememberance day, is of great signifigance to Me personally, as my Father spent 6 years over seas during W.W,2, but being able to celebrate Canada Day in a free country is what it was all about. When You say “happy Canada Day” to a Canadian, this one anyway, You touch a special spot.
