What’s Your take on this piece? Gunbroker listing #977308140. I see a couple of things that are questionable, and would like some of the experts opinions before I attempt a purchase. It would be a great piece for My collection if it’s legit.

Henry,
Coincidentally, I talked to the seller regarding this short rifle. The guy’s name is Sam and claims to be Turnbull’s head gunsmith. Anyway, this one has the long forearm and we went through all the measurements and they seem correct. Rear sight dovetail is 5 inches from the receiver (correct for those with the long wood forearm). The magazine retaining band pin is approx. 3 7/8 inches from the muzzle, front sight is about 1 inch from the muzzle, muzzle is about 3/4 inches in diameter. He also cleaned the bore and said it was bright, shiny, and excellent. In his opinion, the gun is about 85% condition, but hard to tell with the lousy photos with a lot of glare. He said the wood has never been sanded, but may have had some oil or finish applied. I really like the configuration and in the best caliber. But, like Ian mentioned, the butt stock fit at the receiver looks a little off.

I am skeptical of it. When I see short rifle outside of the letterable SN range (even a 22″) with the long forend, I tend to be very skeptical. Add in the fact that it is a takedown and we have an easier avenue to cut down and modify. I do not like the white metal on the top edges of the front sight dovetail. I also do not like the hand filed outside chamfer on the barrel crown (not uniform). I would bet that if one took the mag tube hanger off, or hammered the front sight out, it would be milled recently and probably in the white. And why is “Turnbulls head gunsmith” who has some of the best Winchester restorations go thru his shop and likely a fair amount of knowledge on the subject not calling it a “Short rifle”?? Because it likely has been cut down… My two cents -Austin

Well I wouldn’t question your expertise and experience Austin. I’ll have to eat my reply on this one. I need to get on the computer rather than my phone before making judgment from photos. Then again these photos aren’t near what you provide and I’ve already made that mistake once.
Henry I would proceed with caution now on this one! ⚠️
