Thanks Bert. The ammo I got is the straight with the paper patched bullets. Only problem is the box is missing one of the ends on the lid. Should have been collecting old boxes for parts. I was told this many years ago. I’ll did through my stuff and see if I can find a piece that is the same color. Do you have any idea what a round is worth? 40-90 on the left 45-90 on the right About 1-1/8″ longer.
Chuck,
Giles & Shuey’s book list a price range of $400-800 for the entire box. Individual cartridges go for around $40-50 a piece. Missing a end label on the box probably drops the sale price down a bit, unless the main top label is in really good condition. You might try a paper / box restoration company, most can do a good job of restoring such a box. To find a the correct original missing box end, would probably be next to impossible. Giles & Shuey have that caliber listed as a R3 under their rating system as “Seldom encountered, hard to find”. So selling it as is, would probably yield the most profit to you. Box restoration companies aren’t exactly cheap, and just like the firearms. The cost of restoration out weighs the re-sale price. But it is a big market, especially among the Toy collecting community.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Chuck,
The 40-90 Sharps Straight is a 3-1/4″ long cartridge case, and the 45-90 WCF is just 2-4/10″ in length. The value of an original 40-90 Sharps WRACo cartridge in the condition shown in the picture you posted is approximately $75.

I do not plan to sell these, just add them to my collection. I paid $270 for these. Walt taught me a lot about box restorations so I will fix it the best I can if I can find an old piece of box that is the same color. I talked with Ray Giles over the weekend. He doesn’t give prices but said I made a good buy.
Hell of a good buy, if you ask me. You’d probably could easily double your money.
Sincerely,
Maverick
