Bill, buy the Buffallo Arms ammo. I bet a nice 1885 in good condition is as strong as a shiloh. But I am not sure what the 1885 is set up for when it comes to the bullet diameter and weight? May be the same or not. Slug your barrel. You can ask BA what their twist rate is. I know I have a list of twist rates but I can’t find it? PM Bert.

Looking for 4-5 smokeless that are safe to shoot in an 1885. Buffalo arms has stock, but says their rounds are for Shiloh Sharps rifles only…Thanks Bill
Unless they are loaded for shooting elephants, an original high-wall can easily handle healthy smokeless powder loads. My 40-70 Sharps Straight high-wall shoots best with .408 diameter 325-grain hard cast bullets loaded to 1,400 fps (I use IMR 4198).
