In Clyde Williamson’s book Winchester Lever Legacy on page 167 he shows a Winchester drawing of the WCF 40-70 dated 1912. It list the rim thickness .070″ and diameter at .608″, 45-90 the same on page 88, 40-82 the same Rim thickness but diameter .610″ on page 116. I have loaded all 86 caliber cartridges from 38-56 to 45-90 with 45-70 or stretched 45-70 without messing with the rim.
I have bought cartridges made from 45 basic so I don’t know if they trimmed the rims. Williamson’s book has a RCBS drawing on page 75 that has different measurements, this is a modern drawing. His book tells the type of cases and how he did it, good reference. T/R
