My LGS made 2 this year, one for me and one for a friend. I replaced mine, friend didn’t. If he will let me have it I’ll take it to smith and have him make you 2. It was some new material he had, and turned it on his lathe. My gun made in 1911 didn’t really need replacing either buffer, or spring, but since I had them I replaced them. By doing so hoping to avoid cracking the forearm.
Is there any update on this post?
I got an ’07 end of ’23 and just found ammo at a show two weeks ago and put five rounds thru it to test. Shot great, much more powerful than I had heard all my life!
I can’t find anyone that specifies WHAT they have made replacement buffers out of. My understanding it the originals were vulcanized rubber, but I think that might be the previous, less powerful pre-’07 models. I didn’t take my buffer out when I was cleaning up the gun after finally getting it apart, didn’t know at that time it had one. It had sat rusting w pile of other rifles in a shed where humidity, dirt, and cat piss were plentiful. I’ve had to shower after cleaning some of them for my cousin (he gave me ’07 for cleaning some of the others in the pile) because they were so filthy. His daughter brought some pistols from the batch in a box in a trash bag bc they were stinking up her truck on the way.
Anyhoo, the 351 and 401 buffers I’ve seen have been something like mycarta or other hard fiber, but its hard to tell as they’re from 1958 and earlier. I have a lathe and am toying with the idea of finding some of the higher-durometer material similar to what 10/22 buffers are made of and trying it out. I am terrible on the lathe but will certainly let everyone know what happens if I decide to pull the trigger (pun intended).
