An old timer buddy brought by an 1873 (third model) chambered in .38-40. It is missing the buttplate. I truly know very little about these guns… but a quick look through Madis and it appears the butt stock on this is the shotgun style. It has no hole for a cleaning rod and a “crow foot” at the top, not the normal crescent style. He’s asked me to help him find one.
Where can I find a 1873 shotgun style buttplate? Preferably an original. PM me if you have one to sell or point me in the direction of a seller.
Jeremy
What was probably and the most common shotgun butt plate was the smooth steel plate with the widows peak at the top like this one that sold on Ebay.

Yes. I’m sorry… Widows peak. Not crows foot. Wow, I’m showing my ignorance here. Anyway, this is the one I’m looking for. Too bad it sold.
I have no idea if a model 70 plate will fit a 73

Me either, but it is certainly something I would like to try someday.
In addition to the Model 70 (which was actually the last Winchester Model to use the checkered steel shotgun style butt plate), the same style butt plate was used on the following models: The Single Shot rifle (special order), 1886 lever-action rifle (special order), 1887 lever-action shotgun, 1892 & 1894 lever-action rifles (special order), 1897 slide-action shotguns (standard for the years 1904 – 1906), 64, 65, and 71 lever-action rifles (standard), and there may be a few other models that used it on a special order basis. It would be interesting to assemble a group of these model guns and see if the butt plates are dimensionally all the same (interchangeable). I suspect that they are on at some of the Models (64, 65, 70, and 71).
