I am looking to buy a 1st. mod. 1890. Must be in 90+% original condition. I have an f.f.l. to look after any paperwork etc., if need be.  You can call Me ,(519-522-1764), or p.m. Me, if You have one You’de  part with. I would really like a deluxe but would settle for a nice standard gun.

Henry,
Winchester did not have a deluxe (pistol grip, checkered and fancy) option until 1897.  The solid frame was only made until about 1892.  So if you want a solid frame you have to look for one with the most case coloring you can find.

OK, so My miss use of the “deluxe” terminoligy. I would really like a first model with a checkered stock.

That’s a rare bird Henry, I had Cody do an extended search for me on serial # 17908. This serial number is a very early second model, full nickel with deluxe wood straight grip checkered.

Their letter states:

Upon further examination of the records, it was discovered that there were approximately thirteen checkered, fancy wood, rifles produced before mine of # 17908. The end of the first models ended in the 15,xxx serial range. The letter does not give the serial #’s of the rifles but I would bet a dollar or two a few of them (if not most) are second models. Realistically, you are looking for the proverbial needle in the hay stack and to find one with a high grade condition will be a real feat.

Good luck on your search, I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a long one……….

I confused you.  They didn’t have that option with a solid frame.  But there were some clean up guns when they went to the 2nd Model takedown so maybe some rare bird is out there?

Chuck; where did they come up with the values for solid frame “1st’mod. Deluxe 1890’s ” in the Red Book if they never made any. Although they’re awful pricey at $23,450.00 for a 90% gun , they must exist.

I guess since Larry is no longer with us you’ll have to ask Bert.  Larry was an 1890 collector and I bought a very nice LR from him. When Paul Vanderlinden, (Paul has many photos in the book), was getting older he sold some guns to Steve Day.  Steve Day may know more?   I sold one of my solid frames to Paul. I have never met the Kidd brothers.

I have never seen a deluxe solid frame or even heard of one but I went back through the book and on page 142 there is a list of “Extras for Model 1890 Rifles 1891” taken from the Win 1891 catalog.  All the “deluxe” options are listed.

But on page 163 there is a picture of the “only known First Model in deluxe grade”.  It went back to the factory in 1912 to be upgraded.  It was not originally  shipped as a checkered, fancy stock.  It is in the Cody Museum and it has proof marks.

On Harry Viezens website, he has a very early second model 90 that is in a deluxe configuration, in nice condition. He doesn’t handle beat up pieces.

Randy Saba had a beautiful 1890 in Colorado.  I did not pick it up but it was quite the beauty.  Not a solid frame.

Henry, This might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but I think it helps to see what’s out there and possibly what’s not. Like others have said you’re looking for a pretty “rare bird”, but you know that. That’s also half the fun. Never know who picked up one of the rare ones from collectors in the past who’s collections have gone to auction. Like Chuck stated, the Kidd brothers collection, Vanderlinden, etc…………..

Henry I bought my first solid frame for $300 and my last one for $3000.   If you get a lot of case color the price will go way up.
