Been learning about my recently acquired Winchester model 1892 with a .218 barrel dated 1942. This rifle has a bolt that is machined for what I have learned is a model 98c bolt mounted peep sight. Been scouring the Flea Bay and the Internet in general looking for one, but coming up dry. Anyone here have one, even a beat up one I can use as a pattern?
Right now, I have a Lyman 56 mounted, which works, but the bolt mounted peep looks much sleeker.
What is the serial number on your Winchester? Is the upper tang marked “Model 1892” or “Model 92” ?
The No. 98C bolt peep is one of the scarcer sights used by Winchester, as it was only used on the Model 65 in caliber 218 Bee (and not on all of them). Finding one that is not attached to a rifle will most certainly be a difficult task.

The serial number is 427052. Upper tang is marked “Model 1892” Clearly a receiver that pre-dates the .218 Bee. It has the correct proof marks and the barrel is marked Model 92 correctly. The seller claimed that it was re barreled at Winchester but without documentation this is speculation. Whatever it is is is very well done. It cycles properly, and has the bolt that is machined for the 98c peep sight. It is certainly a good shooter, and with he Lyman 56 peep I have been getting a fine group using up old ammunition so far.
Just looking for the 98c sight so that it is a slimmer package for the scabbard.
Erik,
It is possible that Winchester rebarreled it. The first thing I would check is the 2-digit date (year) stamped on the bottom of the barrel. On the handful of Factory reworked Model 1892/92 rifles with 218 Bee barrels, the dates found are in the 48 to 51 range, and were factory altered Model 43 rifle barrels.
Can you provide a clear picture of the Winchester address and caliber marking on the visible part of the barrel? To view the barrel date marking, you will need to remove the magazine tube and forend stock.

I just tried to post a picture, but I am not a member, I think that prevents it. I just set the rifle on my desk alongside of a 1950 made Winchester model 43 in .218 Bee and he markings are of a different style altogether. I took off the forearm and can see that the barrel date is clearly 42, with a very small capitol B. Guessing a re marked model 65 barrel?

Yes, it could be a remarked Model 65 barrel, but the pictures will tell the story.
