I have a 1873 SRC made in 1887. It’s a special order carbine with rifle butt, button mag. and ” Front sights fine ” description on Cody letter.
Along with docs is a description letter by Madis saying ” fine front sight, which is unusual”. Later he says ” forged, and somewhat narrow blade”. I could not find the sight in his book or Stroebel’s.
The sight is 5/16″ long, 1/4″ wide and 3/8″ at highest point. Can anyone put a type number ( & manufacturer if appropriate ) ?
There is not going to be a number for it or find it in a catalog since its was not dovetailed. Its soldered in. The “Front sights fine” in the letter I believe refers to it was made with a narrow (fine) profile for a finer sighting picture.

Bill,
There are 2 basic types of 73 carbine posts that I’m aware of, the early first models had the front sight integral to the front barrel band and the solid type like you have.

Very nice looking 1873 Carbine Blueliner. Also very neat is the mention of the sight in your Cody letter.

Thanks for the response. I had not realized sights soldered on the barrel were not designated with a type of number.
That leads to a whole new topic of the various custom sights soldered on barrels and what models it was used on.

The same sight used on your “Saddle Ring Carbine with Rifle buttstock” is what Winchester used on the standard 1873 Musket front sight.
Very nice unique Rifle, opps I mean Carbine! Glad it letters, and in my opinion that Madis Letter is a very nice extra to have with it.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Its in the right place. Normally the barrel band was ahead of the sight.
