Great questions…. unfortunately I do not know the answers to them. If you do find the answers please let me know! If you do not get any information here on the forum, try contacting Brad Dunbar via a PM.

Hi,

According to the Winchester blueprints the Model 53 used the Lyman 31W gold bead front sight on all calibers.  The Lyman catalog of the period shows the height of the 31W is .445″.

Hope that helps.

Interesting JWA.Looked up the Lyman 31W sight and it does not look like any front sight I have seen on a Model 53.Having said that, I have not seen a lot of Model 53 rifles in my hand.

The ones I have seen, seem to look like the same front sight that was used on the Model 55.Perhaps the same sight, but with a different height?

I am not a lever-action guy so I can only pass on what is on the drawings.  It does appear to be the same sight as the Model 55.  Here is the Winchester sheet I was referencing.

Not sure the date of the blueprint, I will have to go pull the original since the date is stamped on the back of them.  It is possible they changed the front sight specification over the years.

Here is a picture borrowed from PRE64WIN’s great website –

https://pre64win.com/products/lyman-31w-front-sight-for-pre-war-rifles

That sight looks like some I have seen on Model 53’s but again, I don’t pay much attention to them, .22’s are my focus.

To back up the information Jeff posted, I opened up my copy of the 1925 and 1931 Winchester catalogs, and both state that the front sight for both the Model 53 and Model 55 was a Lyman Gold Bead sight.

I have a Model 53 in 25-20 and a Model 55 in.30 WCF.They have gold bead front sights ,but the bases  on the sights are more oval rather than the more square base as seen in the pictures posted. Also the front and back of the sight does not go out past the oval base. All the Model 55 and 53 rifles I have seen have had this style of front sight.

My M53’s are buried in my safe, so I cannot get to them. I am pretty sure they both have the Lyman #3 with the gold bead. My M55 Takedown has the same sight.  Big Larry

Here is a picture of a Lyman No. 3.  I don’t see any data for different heights.

See page 316 of Stroebel’s book.  Model 53 (1924 to 1932)  25-32 calibers Lyman No. 3 (.0625″) 1/16″ gold bead .240″ tall. For 44 cal. same bead but .200″ tall.  He also says as an option the 1892 sights are the same.

Maybe different heights for the M55 as well. One of mine has a Redfield, ( probably changed), and the other a #3 Lyman. Both 30-30’s.                                  As stated, both my M53’s have the #3 and maybe different heights. One is a 44 WCF and the other a 32-20. Locked away in my safe, to hard to get to. Same page of Strobel’s book, 316.

Model 55, 1957 to 1961.  Front sight is a 75 E.  No other data.  I do see references to a 75 C that is .330″ high for other Models. I also see a 75 D.  No pictures for either and still no data for the 75 E ??

I looked in another of Strobel’s books, Old Gunsights & Rifle Scopes, and on page 206 he talks about the 75 sight. “Winchester 22 cal front sight as of 1926.  Dovetails into the barrel. Tinned silver bead, marked Pat Nov 4, 1902.  No 75 A for 1890, 75 B for 1903 and 75 C for for Model 56.

I do not have Strobel’s other book. I did not find anything in Rowe’s book.

Chuck the Model 55 centre fire rifle was not made in the 1957 /1961 era.  That must be info for another rifle.

The Model 55 made in 1957 – 1961 was a semi-auto single shot .22 rim fire rifle.

We need Clarence to go through his sight data.  I don’t even know what a Model 55 is.  I just posted what was in the sight books.

confirming what others have said – I have owned a lot of lever action Models 53 and 55 and the front sights on all of them were the same – example attached.
