Does it have any different or more information about the Winchester sights compared to the other sight books like the Madis sight book or Stroebel’s book.
I can’t find any pictures of the book or any pages to see what it has.

Bob, I don’t think it has more text information than the other books, it has more, larger, and better pictures though. It does contain a lot of information on scopes, sight adjusters, patent info, sight boxes, and the cased sight sets. Some pictures are as much as 5″. I think this is a good addition to your other 2 books. Here is a couple pictures. Notice the keyboard and the business card in the first shot to see the size of the pictures.
Do you know if there is anywhere to buy that book online?

Maverick,
Yes, here is a link to Rowe’s web site which is the cheapest with free shipping other wise you can get it on Ebay and pay shipping. I ordered one since it contains other gun sights which could be put on a Winchester.

Does anyone have experience ordering through rdgunbooks.com? I found little info about them with google search. Just want to know if they are reputable business before I place order. Not saying they aren’t, just want to verify.
Thanks,
Mac

Yes, Randy Duckett is a real good guy. Bought several books from him at the Denver show the other day. 719) 510-8919, [email protected] He does not list on Amazon anymore because they rip him off. He sells many thousands of books each year. I’m sure you will be happy.
I got my book today and paged through it. I’m really disappointed in the Winchester sight section. For some reason he lists the dovetail measurements of the specific sight he pictures so the measurements vary widely from sight to sight. Some sights have a fair description of them while others are lacking. He list a rarity to each sight from 1 to 5. I just wish he would of gotten input from Winchester collectors.

The 62A Folding Peep sight looked a little tall so I checked it with one of mine and they have the 62B pictured instead of a 62A.

Bob, sorry you didn’t like the book. Let us know what else you see that is wrong.
I ordered through Rdgunbooks.com last week (May 24) and received today (June 3). I was sold on the notion that this book has large and clear illustrations/pics. So what do I think? Nice big coffee-table book with large illustrative pictures, but…as noted by 1873man, there are errors and omissions. As example very light treatment of Lyman 48 series receiver sight. On page 202 there is a pic of “No. H8WJS” (SIC) with what appears to be a Lyman 57 clearly marked “EN.” The exact same pic appears on page 201 “No. 57 for Springfield, Mauser etc.” Content lacking, editing errors.
I wish I’d waited on reviews before I made the purchase. Old Gunsights & Rifle Scopes by Nick Stroebel will remain my go-to reference source with American Rifle Sights in reserve for those pics that I know to be correct.

Bob and Big Mac. I am going to email Tom and ask him to explain the dovetail measurements. I am a bit confused on the 62 peep sight? On page 134 it shows a 62 A and a 62 B. Bob let me know how I should comment on these. Big Mac I agree that he used the same picture on pages 201 and 202. Is the one shown on page 201 correct and the other one on page 202 incorrect as far as how they are labeled?
If anyone else has a comment please let me know.

Chuck,
I believe the sight pictured on page 201 is correctly labeled as a No. 57 and the application code in the pic is FN and not EN as I first reported. The sight on page 202 is certainly not a “No. H8WJS” (SIC) as labeled which I think the author intended as a No. 48. Regardless, the sight number and the associated picture on page 202 are incorrect. Hopefully I haven’t made this too confusing.
BTW, page IV copyright date is 2013. I thought this to be a newly published book? Maybe it just took a while to get it printed and in distribution.

Chuck,
Is he going to make corrections, I thought it would be a little late for that.
Here is a picture of a couple of 62A’s and 62B’s side by side so you can see the difference

Plenty of errors & omissions in the Old Scopes book. There’s really no substitute for the original catalogs of sight & scope makers, most of which are now available in cheap reprints (but not when I was buying originals many decades ago!). The “one book” that will replace such factory sources of information is as much of a myth as the “one size fits all” myth applied to clothing.
Bob, thanks for the pictures. I have not contacted him yet. I was waiting for more responses. I noticed on page IX he shows the dovetail sizes for all the gun makers. He show Winchesters to be .375″. On the same page he talks about measuring at least 100 of the sights himself, manufacturing tolerances and the possibility of errors on his part.
I doubt he will put out a new book soon. Maybe he can produce an addendum? At the least errors could be corrected in the next version.
His contact information is on page IV. On page VIII he states the importance of Strobel’s book and his is meant to be a companion to it.
I like the book. The larger pictures really show more details. Like most books, this one isn’t perfect.
