Am I missing something here? The sights are all mentioned in the letter. Isn’t the “Lyman Rear” sight the tang sight? The folding sight and Lyman front are also referred to in the Letter. Please clarify. Thanks. RDB
Roger,
The owner does not have a letter for his Model 1890 rifle (yet), so I think you did miss something.

I am going to order a letter. I will post what the letter says. Here is the pic showing the barrel mark. It is right in the middle of the top of the barrel behind the sight.
I was thinking of the mark or “shadow” ordinarily left by an elevator, which is the length & width of the bottom of the elevator, but now I remember the M90 had a screw adjustment, so that does appear to be what your photo shows–where the screw bore down on the brl.

If the mark is 1-1/2″ from the center of the dovetail Clarence is right on.

The mark is exactly 1.5 inches from the center of the dovetail. Still gonna get a letter.
Well, let us know the result. Remember that when any gun was equipped with the standard sights for that model, there will be no description of them in the ledger–only special order sights were noted in the ledger. That is, if the record keeper didn’t neglect to write them down, which often happened!
Greetings again.
I did finally receive a letter for this rifle.
Not a mention about the sights so seems standard sights from the factory.
The Lyman rear sight was added later. I’m sure because it folds flat to accommodate a tang sight.
And I should have looked more closely at the upper tang previously.
It is very clearly apparent where a tang sight had been present previously.
Thanks everyone for your input.

To restore the rifle to original. you may need a Winchester M30, and they are readily available on Ebay. 4 piece sight. One goes in the dovetail, the attaching screw, the sight itself, and a adjusting screw that made the mark on your bbl. I myself would restore it as parts are readily available. Big Larry

I am now thinking of a tang sight.don’t have any tang sight guns and I am curious.
You’re in luck! Big Larry is having a fire sale on tang sights!

I thank you for that.I had originally not wanted to change anything as it was my friend’s gun gin who passed away.
but I am now thinking of a tang sight.

thanks to all
I do have the exact tang sight for your rifle. It is a Lyman 1-A and is near mint cond. One of the mounting screws is a bit buggered, but will work. I will give you a special price. $125 + $10 USPS Priority Mail. Big Larry
Wow Sir. I appreciate that offer and I am very sorry to admit that I purchased a Lyman 1A from eBay just the other day for a lot more than $125.
dumb me.
I really appreciate you guys on here with the input and help.
Big Larry, if I need a tang sight after all and if the one I have yet to receive is not acceptable I will let you know.
And certainly I will give you more than $125 as a thanks for your help.
Several on this forum have helped me and provided much info.
I thank you all.

The correct Lyman 1-A for your rifle, will have a tiny WS stamped underneath. It will fit the M1906, the M1890, and early M62. No others. Big Larry

Why won’t it fit others? If it screws onto the gun and sits straight up it could be used on whatever. It also has to be tall enough. Are these too short?

Larry goes strictly by the book, whereas if I can make it work, “factory” or not, that’s good enough for me.
Being too tall for close range would probably be more likely than not tall enough, but using a higher front sight might compensate for that.
