Thanks Jeff for all of the info.

So Bob, do you think this sight first came out in 1908?

I’m not sure how long black powders were produced but I was thinking pre 1900 after reading JWA’s post “26A Buckhorn Sight (Supplied with Black Powder 73, 86, 92 & 94) -“

Just because it is made for black powder guns does not mean it was made during that period.

According to Dan Shuey’s books a large number of center fire black powder loads were discontinued by 1938. The BP 38-55 was last loaded in 1935 and was discontinued in 1937.  In 1947 blanks were the only ones still loaded with black powder. He does not say what caliber of blanks,

They would include the calibers commonly used in “movie guns”:  .45 Colt, .45-70, etc., even some smokeless rounds, because smoke from a gun barrel was supposed to add realism to the action of the film.

I previously suggested one way this could be done, or at least approximated–by catalog research.  I pointed out that it was listed in the 1925 catalog, but not that of 1918.  That leaves only 4 or 5 years of “uncertainty,” & it’s unlikely it was done until all war production ended.  Cornell Pubs. publishes cheap reprints of those years, so there you go.

I looked through the 12 Volume set and they are not pictured.  I didn’t read all of the text.

Does this set include the years between 1919 & 1924?

Ok I’m gonna let this one go cuz after reading all the post again it appears I forgot about the 1908 date posted by JWA & nothing further to suggest earlier. Appreciate all the replies fellas.

No, it ends at 1918.  There is another set with at least 3 more volumes.

Stroebel’s “Old Gunsights” book has some catalog excerpts, including 1926 and 1929.  The California Buckhorn sporting rear sight, No. 26A is listed in the 1926, 1929 and 1935 catalogs.   It is not listed in the 1918 catalog.

I have to wonder why this sight and others have change dates that seem to pre-date when they showed up in catalogs.   Is this possibly the “mail order” angle?

I call myself a collector as it sounds better than hoarder

How do you place a mail-order for something that isn’t listed in the catalog, or some other advertisement?  In other words, how do you know it exists, unless you have some private source of info direct from the company?
