Instead of blowing up Jeff’s phone all the time (the Model 69 book is GREAT btw, if you’re reading this JWA….) I thought I’d ask this here for future folks to benefit…

I’m putting an 80B sight on a mod 69A target and have all the pieces I think…..But where does the circled washer go? It is slightly concave and something I’d normally call a spring washer….

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,

It goes on the thumbscrew, curved side toward the head of the screw, cupped side toward the sight arm.  The purpose of the “Belleville” spring washer is to keep tension on the arm, even if the thumbscrew is a little loose.  Otherwise, as soon as the thumbscrew loosened the arm would drop down and your elevation would be off (unless you were smart enough to adjust the small set screw to your “zero” position).

There should also be a cupped washer that goes on the aperture stem for the same reason (your windage adjustment) so you might be missing one or the other washer (the ID is different for each) if you only have one.

I have spares of both if you need one.

Best Regards,

And, after further review of your picture it looks like you also might be missing the small screw that holds the elevation graduation plate in place (lower right-hand corner of the plate).

Best Regards

Thanks Jeff, I have all three plug screws in the receiver, I was hoping the small one worked in the graduation plate hole but haven’t tried it yet. The washer I have seems to match the thumbscrew perfectly.

About to throw it together when one college game ends here in a bit….

The small screw in the corner is a Winchester proprietary thread ( .076”-56 W.R.A. Co. Std.) so if there is a screw there, hopefully it is an original sight screw.

A #1-56 screw will fit loosely but might work in a pinch, with Loctite if necessary.

The original was there and it seemed to tighten down fine, so all good. Someone boogered it up a little on the rear barrel dovetail but other than that, it will be back to original as soon as the shark fin gets here (thanks to Ben!)…maybe I’ll grab the missing washer from you someday …that will be fun to cross the country with to a show! 😄

I also have a nice 57EW for the other 69A when it arrives next week. Found a nice complete one on eBay…. Happy New Year! 🎊

I can bring the washer to the Las Vegas Antique Arms show later this month or you can pick it up at the Tulsa show from me in April.  Of course I can also put it in an envelope and lick a stamp also…..
