I recently acquired what I think to be a decently rare Model 12. It is a 1935 “Standard Trap” 16 gauge with a 2 bead solid rib (ivory mid bead). The one question I do have is it has a black diamond stock, which I necessarily don’t think isnt not original. I know the black diamond was still orderable on higher grade model 12s until about 1940, but I also know the standard trap was just that a basic to spec trap gun. Wondering what others think, I obviously know the pad isn’t correct but even if the stock isn’t right I’m very happy with the gun as I got it for what I feel was a great deal on a hard to find Model 12! Will try to add photos here in just a bit

Nice shotgun.
Interesting detail with the serial number being adjusted to move out of the way of the “Standard Trap” stamping. You’d think it would have been the other way around. Don’t know if I’ve ever noticed that on another shotgun before, but I haven’t paid that much attention either.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Gorgeous American Black Walnut. Are you going to resist the urge to recut the checkering? I couldn’t!
Full choke? 2 3/4″ chamber? I’d guess so by 1935.
A very nice Model 12. Don’t sweat the pad. It needs one and that one looks good.

I have no plans to touch anything, I plan to enjoy using the gun just the way it is!

Stock figure is about what I expect to see on a Black Diamond Trap gun. I’m a bit puzzled by the chambering but I started out with a 20ga so who knows? Have you measured the stock dimensions? The drop appears to be more than standard and the LOP a bit short but I’ve been wrestling with QuickBooks all day.

Mike the stock is definitely short on the LOP this i do know. The pad is a period correct Hawkins. I do assume that either a woman or a teen probably used it (+ side being im a smaller guy so it fits ok). Can get measurements this afternoon. I’m not trying to claim the stock is “right” I’m just trying to find out if it is original to the gun.

It’s possible the stock was made to order. OTOH it’s hard to find a well-used Trap gun that’s original. Serious shooters will modify a gun to fit or work better for them at the drop of a hat. A favorite gun may get refinished a time or two during a long career. Sometimes they would order it to fit their requirements. Hard to imagine these days but I wouldn’t rule it out.

This i know and understand, but would think it wasn’t as the “standard trap” was just that a gun built to a “standard” configuration, where as the “special trap” was fit to order. i‘m more a less trying to see what everyone thinks about the stock being a black diamond on a “standard trap” grade opposed to the “Model-12-Trap”
