Non original slide handle stock, aftermarket recoil pad, and the Vent rib is an aftermarket item as well. It should be a very nice “shooter” grade gun, but it will be of minimal interest to the serious Model 12 collectors.

Bert, thank you for providing me with the adjective I’ve been searching for, “serious”. It will be even more useful when capitalized and used in the expression, “Serious Collector” to describe a Guru of truly heightened awareness who seeks nirvana by owning the unobtainable.
I sought to label this person by merely capitalizing the “c” in “collector” but that is at best a pale shadow of “Serious Collector.”
Now I need to work on the Serious Collector’s analog. “Frivolous” comes to mind but doesn’t adequately convey the sense of moral decay….

Bill,
You can substitute the adjective “Diehard” if it makes you feel any better.
Like it or not (agree or disagree), the fact of the matter is this… it is the “serious” or “diehard” collectors out there that do the research, write the reference books, and pay the premium values for the unmolested (original) guns that are decreasingly found in very good (or better) condition. I highly doubt that any “serious” collector is “frivolous” with his/her pursuit of their hobby. That stated, none of that changes the fact that the Model 12 is a very fine gun, and a wonderful gun to shoot.

You forgot to use mixed caps.

Your response to the OP’s request was absolutely true. However, you might have considered adding to your response to him: “That stated, none of that changes the fact that the Model 12 is a very fine gun and a wonderful gun to shoot.”
Although you did say it should make a very nice shooter’s gun. Perhaps I’m asking for too much but I’m very concerned about not running off enthusiasts of the brand.

Bill,
My initial response to the OP was direct and to the point (as most are). Apparently, the OP had no issue with my response and thanked me for it.
My question to you is this… why do you feel it necessary to publicly critique my posted replies?? I certainly do not appreciate it. If you believe that you can provide a better response to the vast number of posted questions here on the WACA forums, I urge you to do so.

I’ll never be a Serious Collector. I’m having way too much fun shooting these old Winchesters. I don’t have room for a shooter Model 12 but I sure like this one.
Mike
I understand both sides. I’m a automotive restoration mechanic and I’m constantly bouncing between “correct” and “useable” so I wasn’t turned off by the response. Others may be, I don’t know. It a very pretty gun, that I’m sure if I were to shoot it and I will, I’ll enjoy it.
It would be a great gun to take out into the woods. Personally, I would remove the black buttpad and install a solid red Galazan repro Winchester pad on it. Better yet, if you have a set of large calipers, measure the length and widest width of the butt (the wood)… I have some vintage original Winchester take offs. If I have one that would fit, I’d donate to your cause… it would cost you about $60. to have a gunsmith install it. Cheers… Ben

Thank you for the offer Ben. I’ll need to get it out again and take a few measurements.
