So I have recently inherited my grandpas model 1897. I’m just curious on trying to figure out when it was made and all that fun stuff.

SN is 42508

Other markings are a ‘12’ at the beginning of the barrel

On the Slide we have the nice ‘Winchester Model 1897‘

On the bolt(?) is ‘Pat. Applied for’

And finally we have a ‘Manufactured by Winchester Repeating arms ( A couple words lost to the sands of time)

New Haven Cont. Pat. (Rest is lost to the sands of time)’

Cant upload pics here, but I can email them if need be

Hello Caden,

Your Model 1897 is a very early production gun (manufactured in November 1897).  Production of the Model 1897 began in July 1897.

You can send pictures of it to me at – [email protected]
