This 1947 Standard Trap Model 12 popped up on a local firearms shop online classified ad for $499. and I went to just look at the wood… I’m a sucker for nice figured wood. I didn’t need it, but I liked it… I shouldn’t have, but I did… I bought it. It’s far from perfect, but the buttstock appears uncut and I do have a very nice original solid red buttpad that I can replace the existing with… So, I plopped down the cash and will now wait till Aug. 15th to bring her home. I bought my first Model 12 Trap (Y-series) when I was 14. I had saved my money for several months after I saw the pic in a Winchester brochure… then at 19, traded it for a used Marlin 336 to go hunting with. I’ve always looked for another “Y” series (to atone for my youthful stupidity) but am quite happy with finding the original version.
Considering a new “Mossberg” will set you back the same amount you paid for the model 12 I would say you did well. If it’s a factory vent rib you did very well and considering the high grade wood versus a Tupperware stock I would say you did really Good. Along with the vintage hard leather case, great buy!
Have fun with your new toy!

Current pad is wrong… the “duck bill” vent rib is original… the hard part is the waiting to get to play with it. I figure I better buy what I want now as my state’s laws will only get worse over time.
I’ve made a few buys over the years just to point my middle finger at the State’s laws. We call your area Northern San Francisco.
In my humble opinion, its as long as the antigunners thought they could make it and still get it to fly through the legal system. They espouse a “cooling off” period to avoid spur of the moment purchases for revenge/whatever. The intent primarily is to discourage firearm ownership of any kind but are cloaking it in more obtuse terms. I’ve little doubt my state will try further expanding such despite “instant” back ground check capability. What succeeds in one anti gun venue soon appears elsewhere. Can you say “one gun per month?” Virginia had that when I was stationed there, its been proposed in the past here, likely to arise sometime in the future. Tim

And in a state that would pass such a law, the legal system, the courts, function to back up the legislature. Appeals to higher courts & the SC cost millions. Legal expenses are irrelevant to the state, but where does the plaintiff find that kind of money? Once, help could be expected from NRA, but its resources have been squandered defending Wayne L. The Heller vs NYS case was financed principally by NY Rifle & Pistol Assn.; is there no comparable org in Washington?
There are several groups that have been fighting the legal battle for several years… our entire government system has been taken over by progressive nonsense. The Executive branch, Legislative branch and courts are controlled by the left and have been for the last 20 years. Their motto seems to be, “if California does it, we can do it worse”. The financial costs for the multiple lawsuits have been in the millions… the main gun club in Washington is “WAC… Washington Arms Collectors”. What was once a 30,000 member club with monthly shows with over 1000 tables has become a non-factor. Membership is below 5000… the shows are now less than 250 tables and are held 4 times a year… The real “death nail” was the last referendum that required the two week wait… there is discussion about a “safety sales tax” on ammo… and a limit of one box of 50 per month… I bought the “family farm” so no chance of moving to a different state and ultimately, will be buried here.

Ben-
As you may have noticed at Cody earlier this month I can’t make an argument for “needing” another Model 12, especially a Trap Gun, but I probably would have done what I could to add that to the herd. I’m a sucker for pretty wood, for a moment I thought it was a Black Diamond.

Mike, I’ve learned that the “Winchester-itis” disease actually brings a smile to one’s face. Once infected, it spreads aggressively and has no known cure… can only be stopped by a zero balance in ones bank account along with a maxed out credit line. Just one more…. it’s only one more… what?!?!? you have two for sale? I’ll take them both! 🙂
Ben, I think what the rest of us do – that you made a very good buy. I don’t think any of us would have passed it up.
Except for a retired heavyweight boxer whose bells have been rung so many times the frontal lobe damage is already done, I don’t know trapshooters who don’t use a serious recoil pad.
I’d try the ventilated pad on the gun before I peeled it off. If you can’t stand it, replace it with a solid red Sorbothane model. The one that’s on it works better than the solid replica, which may look more “original” but doesn’t absorb the pounding of 12 gauge trap loads nearly as well. The older I get the more I prefer “typical” to “factory” and your M12 looks to me like what the heavy hitters used to bring to the line. I’ve been accused by friends of [urinating] upwind, too.

I’ve learned to stop while I have sufficient funds for a few flats of shells. Most of these old trap guns have been shot a lot and I feel it’s my duty to (try to) finish wearing them out. I think you’re going to want to shoot this gun! I believe I bought a replica of the red ventilated Winchester recoil pad from Brownell’s. It’s likely correct for my Y-Model but likely too late for your 1947 model. My 1920’s Black Diamond does not have a recoil pad but I slip one on while no one’s looking….strictly to increase the length of pull, of course.
Mike
I added a pic of the other side to the original post…
As far as the buttpad…. My Model 12 book says that all 12ga Trap Guns had pads… Also, standard pull (including the pad) is 14 3/8″. The stock measures 13 5/8″ (not including the Pachmayr pad… I have a couple factory Winchester butt pads and they are both 3/4″ thick… so I’m cautiously optimistic the stock hasn’t been cut… Measurements were done with a tape measure at the store, so I could be off…

Looks like it should, Ben! Thanks for the pics of that beautiful stock.
