Well done! I’m limiting myself to Models 12 I can afford to shoot but I’d eat beans and tortillas for a few months for the honor of having a nice 28 gauge Skeet gun, even if the rib was not installed at the factory. Dunno what I’d do for ammo, tho.
I doubt the 20 saw much or any use as a trap gun, most were 12 gauge with full choke in a bit longer barrel. I use an improved modified choke with modern ammo for singles in a 12ga these days but old guns & loads liked tighter chokes. My old Trap guns with full chokes absolutely smoke singles Trap targets on the rare days when I’m on my game. I have a plain 26” barrel 20ga that I’d love to take dove hunting some day, I think your 20 would be an even better choice.

For the experts some clear photos of the barrel stampings, serial numbers and ribs will be helpful.

The 20…SN – 1426788, 1954, 20ga, 2 3/4″, MOD, 28″ Simmons Vent Barrel – Trap or Skeet?
Neither… it is a Standard gun with a Mod choked barrel. The Vent Rib is aftermarket as are the stocks. The gun was refinished by Simmons when they installed the VR and the new stocks. This gun was manufactured in February 1952.

Thanks for all the info!!!What do the Simmons Vent Ribs do to the value of these Model 12’s, increase or decrease?
Thanks, KJ
In the collector market the Simmons VRs decrease the value of the gun. In the “shooter” market, they tend to increase the value. The thing to keep in mind, is that the collectors typically pay more $$$$ for a correct (original) gun than “shooters” pay for their guns.

The 28…
SN – 1613733, 1957, 28ga, 2 7/8″, SKEET, 26″ Simmons Vent Barrel – Skeet Gun?
Yes, it is a Skeet Gun, but with an aftermarket Vent Rib and recoil pad. It was refinished when Simmons installed the VR. It was manufactured in September 1954.
Bert,I see the 28 gauge gun is marked skeet on the side of the barrel.I assume Simmons did that after the rib was installed and covered up the old stamp on top of the barrel?Would I be correct on that or is there another reason, such as the original was a solid rib?
Edit.Forget about that question.Brain not fully in gear.LOL It is the Winchester proof mark that is on the top,not the choke marking. There is no Winchester proof mark on the side so a plain barrel ,with a Simmons vent rib installed.Am i correct on that.:)
