I think I may have made a good deal. I convinced the shop owner the barrel was cut. I did think it was! It measures 25" inside the bore, which measures .578. Don’t know if that is correct for a full choke.

Is this the correct proof?

The standard barrel length for the Model 1912 20-gauge shotguns was 25-inches, so No, the barrel was not cut.

You are not measuring the barrel diameter accurately;

Full = .590
Mod = .603
Cyl = .617

Just in case you are not aware, the chamber length on your gun is 2.5-inches. Winchester did not make the change to the 2.75-inch chamber until the latter part of the year 1926.

Thanks for the info Bert. I measured the bore diameter with my new dial calipers. Perhaps I used it wrongly.

We put a 2 3/4" snap cap in the chamber, so it must have been modified by someone.

Unless the snap cap opens up like a shell does it wouldn’t matter. The chamber must be long enough for a 2.75" shell when its opened up have it checked DO NOT ASSUME it has been modified.

How long is the plastic snap-cap?

I too would not assume that the chamber has been opened up. When Winchester opened them up, they also opened up the ejection port (to allow the longer shell to eject cleanly).

Good point Bert & Mark. The shop owner measured it against a live shell and it was that length. Not opened up. It may not be lengthened.

 sounds like a deal…and the ejection port looks original…so most likely still has the short chamber….I would not have it lengthened …you can order short shells all over the internet….RST, Poly Wad, B&P….ect…

What is the serial number? If it is truly a 1915 vintage gun, the barrel should be marked “MOD 1912″, and yes, it was originally chambered for a 2 1/2” maximum length shell.
