Here’s another gun from my Dad’s collection (WACA member #1885). Seeking any pertinent info about it – any special order features, potential problems, things to looks for, etc., as well as a fair price range.
I assume the recoil pad is not original, but I suspect the stock was not cut down at all. LOP is 14″ to the end of the wood, not including the pad.
Let me know what info I can give to help you assess this gun.
Very nice Model 97
What you have is a May 1925 production Model 97 Black Diamond Trap Gun that appears to be factory original (including the solid red rubber Winchester recoil pad). It should have a 30-inch barrel. The pistol grip stock was special ordered (an English style straight grip stock was standard on the Trap grade guns). It appears to have 2X grade stocks. The monogram inset in gold on the receiver “S. C. SWEET” is extremely likely to be factory original as well.
If it were my gun, I would value it at no less than $5,000.

Oh my!
The barrel measures 32″ to the bolt face. Might it not be original?

A 32-inch barrel was optional, so it very well could be original.
