Kevin-
I think the 1893 is a shotgun that suffered from poor timing. Soon after it was introduced smokeless powder made it obsolete and then the 2 3/4” shell became standard. We hear about 1893’s being swapped out for 1897’s but I won’t address that here. The 1893 is an important part of the history of Winchester repeating shotguns and John Moses Browning. I’ll ignore the timing and marketing issues to admire an awesome shotgun.

Very interesting article, Bert…
Would the serial number (5345) on this 1893 be the 1st year run? I am not sure what my brothers plan for this old Winchester, does anyone have a ballpark value in it’s current condition? I can check the barrel length and report back if that is necessary to determine value.
Thanks, Kevin

Yes, it is a first-year gun (November 1893). Per the factory records, it should have a 30″ barrel, as it is a standard (Field) grade gun.
The broken toe on the butt stock is a detractor to the value, but with a quality repair, it can be improved. In its present condition, it is worth approximately $700.

Does anyone have any information as to if Black Diamond wood was ever offered on the 1893? There wa an 1893 with Black Diamond wood on Rock Island auction a few years ago. I did not bid as it seemed Black Diamond wood was not even available on the 1897 until after the turn of the century.

To answer your question, Yes, it was available on the Model 1893, and on the Model 1897 from the first day of its introduction. For the Model 1893, the total number of guns made with the Black Diamond stocks was very small (less than 4-dozen). The first Model 1897s manufactured with a Black Diamond stock were in the low 34,000 serial range. The lowest numberred gun that I have personally handled is s/n 39576 (dom – 9/25/1897).
