First…I am just a guest, and don’t want to take up a lot of any ones time. I am not a collector and am hoping to get some help from those who are. I am trying to help my Aunt settle my Uncles estate. He had a Winchester lever action hammerless model 88 in 243 cal. Serial number is 110199. Winchester says it was made in 1960. It’s in really good condition. My question is …what is it worth. I have been told that being a pre 64 its worth more that a post 64 gun. Others tell me NO.. Thats only for the model 74s or model 70s. I have been told that the 243 cal. is rare and worth more that the more common 308 cal. I have looked on gunbroker, and prices are all over the place. I had one guy offer me $500.00 for it. I don’t want to rip anyone off, but don’t want to be ripped off either. So… What would be a fare price to ask for this gun? Any help would be appreciated…. THANKS

Bill,
For the most part, the information you received is bogus.
1. The pre-1964 production Model 88 rifles are worth 2X what an otherwise identical post-1963 production rifle is worth.
2. The 243 Win is less common than the 308 Win, but not nearly as uncommon those in 284 Win or 358 Win. Accordingly, it has a slight premium over the 308 Win.
3. The person who offered you $500 for it was looking to more than double his money at your expense. If the rifle grades in 90% condition, it is worth approximately $1,600.
