recently acquired a m 94 in 32-40, 26″ oct. barrel, mfg. in 1896, refinished, nice job was done all edges sharp, lettering clear etc. the question i have is the front sight is a globe type, no center post?, the rear sight is regular sight with elevator. Was this common on the m 94’s of that era, both are 3/8 dovetail.

Are there any markings on it?? It could be either a tunnel front sight, a combination front sight missing the post, or a Marble Vickers sight with a distinct gold ring. Hard to say without pics.

If it’s a Vickers, that’s an easy one to recognize. Because the principal of its design seemed to make good sense to me, I tried a bit of squirrel hunting with one of them, years ago, because a squirrel’s head was the perfect size to center in the ring. However, I soon found it didn’t work as well for me as a simple post or blade, which provided more precise control of shot placement.

will try to add picture of front sight, camera being balky now. but their is no evidence of a post, or the outside of sight being colored.
Do you see a very small hole passing through the bottom of the globe from side to side, just above its base? If so, I think it could be a Lyman 17. (NOT a 17a–a completely different sight.)
