Winchester 1895 Takedown - Metal inserts

I recently purchased a Winchester 1895 Takedown the has two metal inserts. One is one the stock right behind the lever, and the other is on the forend just in front on the frame. Neither one has any legible markings.
Anyone have an idea what they are?
