I agree with Huck.  Using a toothbrush shouldn’t be too aggressive.  Only so much will clean off then just leave it alone.  You don’t want to end up with a bunch of shiny spots.  All you should be doing is removing grime and possibly some light surface rust.

Mike if the gun is safe to shoot you may want to buy this.  Loading die sets are hard to find.  A 3 die set will cost over $100.  Reformed, 45-70, brass can be found on ebay.  Old brass is not safe to shoot.

What would make it not safe to shoot? It feels solid and i feel it would shoot should i just try it?

 A plugged barrel, any bulge in the barrel or chamber, a stuck or broken firing pin, broken notch on the hammer, crack in the receiiver by the locking bars. These are things to look at, but the most common problem is a cartridge case full of smokeless powder. T/R
