OfflineToo bad the auction house cannot tell refinished from original. If you doubt this isn’t a refinish, one look at photograph 7 of 18 with this extremely weak barrel address should convince you something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

OfflineSo are you talking about this picture?
What other signs of a refinish do you see?
Current bid is at $25,000.00.

The seventh photograph shows really weak barrel markings, presumably buffed and reblued. Maybe it’s the photographs?
I’d say its a little weak, but nothing I haven’t seen before.
What do the rest of you fellows think?
Sincerely,
Maverick

It looks buffed to me. One the first rules in identifying refinished is what we’re looking at in photo 7. This gun just seems too pristine. I would want to handle it in person, especially for the kind of money it’s going to hammer for.

Agreed. Way too pristine, especially for a rifle that comes along with a story involving some heavy usage.

OfflineList of hunts and condition don’t match up unless you know someone like my brother. His wife gave him a rifle when they got married forty years ago and it will still score 95% or better after dozens, if not hundreds, of hunting trips. Trophy list is not nearly as impressive but some folks take very good care of their firearms. Flats look good, edges look sharp. Nice gun, too nice for me!

I saw it in Denton TX at the show. Lucky for me I got one from Randy S in Greeley last May. Had some rust on Mag tube, now fixed. Gun has a set trigger that works, we shot her last week, my 1st Deluxe in 40-82. A 38-56 deluxe in transit to us..Bill
Maybe I did see this rifle. I always look at Randy’s guns. I bought a 40-65 from him a few years ago. Not deluxe though.

OfflineWhat baffles me is the absence of WACA membership by some collectors who spend big big money on high value guns. Personally I can’t imagine not being a WACA member because many of the auction guns across the country are discussed and debated on this forum, which certainly educates or at the least opens my eyes sometimes to see things I otherwise might’ve missed, original or not.

OfflineRick,
You make a good point. I have also wondered that myself.
I’m sure there’s some who view as a guest and just take things and information under advisement.
I would think and hope with more members adding to the forum, we could improve on this sometimes slow forum, which contains so much knowledge, sometimes just voicing an opinion can be welcomed.

As I type this there are 326 guests on this forum and I suppose lurkers do benefit from this forum. When I was directed to this forum awhile back I was quick to see the benefits of being able to ask questions, post pics (after a fashion), an awesome magazine and calendar and also discovered the benefits of being a member of Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum. All of these benefits and others have been invaluable to me as a collector but perhaps some folks don’t see it that way.
