Within the above, page 5 of 16, are two Winchester 1885 rifles with case colouring. The one in the right hand column is typical of what I have seen, in my experience. The question is really about the one depicted in the left hand column, third from the bottom, in .45-70. Did original case colouring ever appear that vivid? Maybe so, but I always question something like that, suspecting later restoration. Of course, one photograph a complete analysis does not make, but has anyone seen any this vivid and known to be original?
As for the auction upcoming, I’ll pay little attention to it. Tired of the shenanigans, perceived or real. Yes, I lose most lots at auctions I bid at, but I sometimes win a lot, or if lost, my bid is at least somewhat competitive. At RIA, I am completely blown out of the water.

Certainly is an attractive rifle in a cartridge I like. I have little interest in purchasing anything at the moment so I’ll just enjoy the view.

The high-wall with the brilliant case colors is a completely reworked rifle… new case color finish, and new stocks (incorrectly checkered). It will be interesting to see how RIA describes it.
Indeed! I suspected it was far from original, but being in their preview, I’m suspecting their description of it might border on the “creative”, to say the least.
The CH looks like Turnbull’s work to me. But they normally wouldn’t do the stock that way, but that in of itself doesn’t mean anything.
Sincerely,
