I bought several antique Winchester lever actions, one of the Winchester is a 1876 deluxe with adjust trigger, I have sent to have this Winchester restore when I got this rifle back, I do not believe, the poor quality of the person/company quality are substandard, I talk to the they told me the reason of my side plate when they have color case hardening done, it will show the hammer forge marked, I did know Winchester forging the 1876 side plate.
Is it true Winchester forging the side plate?
Here are two pictures of the issued I have:
I also have 1886 in .38-56 too on part of the purchased.

Sam,
Receiver forging marks will run length wise on sides of the receiver and will have slight wave to them. The side plates are not forged so they wouldn’t have them. What I’m seeing in those photos is in the bottom photo forward of the side plate is machine marks running vertical about 1/4″ long. That is caused by the someone being careless with a tool. The top picture looks like it has the vertical machine marks but I have no reference to size or placement. Here is a picture of a 94 with forging marks.

Thank you Bob, I just got call tag from UPS pick up my 1876 to have it evaluate of the workmanship, I have paid $6,200 and wait for over 18 months when I got it back I don’t believe myself they did a poor job, I hope this time, they will correct the problem.

Sam,
To correct the problem they will have to take more metal off the gun and judging by the depth of the machine marks it will be a fair bit of metal.
