Walter,

Yes, I got your email. Jim Gordon would go table by table at gun shows writing down configurations and serial numbers.

That is pretty cool.  Sounds like someone ordered a matching pair.

Hi,

I have a question. I am currently doing a study  on 1873 deluxe engraved checkered 20 inch rifles. Cody just sent a search that states in brief:

20 inch barrel

Fancy stock

To Russ: X- no date

Shipped 1901

Over the next 10 years it was shipped back to the factory 3 times for upgrades (engraving, checkering etc. ). It was charged to Exhibition Show Case same consign. The upgrades are not stated in the search.

The question I am am asking, is this 1873 considered original or not as the configured  gun today does not match the letter?

This is a well known 1873.

I wouldnt view it as being any less original than any other firearm returned to the factory for repair or upgrades.  However, this particular rifle you mention may not conform to the same survey criterion as your other deluxe short rifles because these upgraded features were added after the fact, whereas the others left the factory in the checked 20″configuration and letter that way.  For someone who has been down that road with these 92 takedown rifles, just add an * with a note for future reference and move on to the next one Wink

Hi,

I am currently finishing this study on these rare/scarce Winchesters for a future article in the Collector. If anyone has more info and pictures, please contact.

Also, I am thinking about a study on 1873 Trapper Carbines with a 16 inch barrel in 32-20. So far I can only find two. It is hard to do a survey with only two, but I know they are rare.

Thanks for your help

Walter Blake
