Hello all. I am wondering if you guys could lend your ears and knowledge. I have recently put a deposit on a used Winchester rifle. In my excitement and haste I failed to actually look at the barrel for caliber. The rifle is a half round half octagon barrel Miroko. The magazine stops at the forearm with a cap like a short rifle. And it has a straight grip stock. The wood is very nice but not what I would call “exhibition” grade or even close. The tag attached to the trigger guard said Winchester Mod 92, 38-55. As you can probably tell I am not an expert on such things but I do know that 38-55 is generally a 1894 chambering. My question is is it even possible that the tag is correct and this rifle is indeed a 38-55 Miroku 92? Any and all advice or comments are appreciated. Thank you all.
If it is a 38-55, it cannot be a Model 92. That stated, it is apparently a modern reproduction (if it has a Miroku marked barrel). Personally, if I were your shoes, I would call the shop you are purchasing it from and ask them all the questions you just asked us… they are in a much better position than we are to answer any questions about the gun.

So, how did it go, did you get any info? Because I recently inherited my late grandfather’s guns, which include several Winchester rifles and shotguns (that was his favorite brand, he’d only bring Winchesters when hunting), and there’s one in 38-55, about which I know little… and as far as I know, so did Gramps, as he just called it “the old one”.

Gramps may not have known much but he knew enough to hunt with a Winchester. Maybe you’re not giving him enough credit.

Don’t worry, I give my Gramps all of the credit he deserves, it is this specific rifle which remained unknown, as he got it from a pawn shop. I’m abroad right now, but I should be able to fly to Kansas this summer and take all of the pictures you guys would need!
Thanks, I suspected that was the case. Looking forward to the pics, I enjoy looking at pics of other folks’ guns. Safe travels!
