I am not sure if this is correct or not, since I don’t normally look at there auction site. But, I read on another forum that two bidders ran the price up to $99,875 not including fees, and taxes! Maybe, someone can confirm this. I have a hard time believing this since the price is about 10 times more then I thought it was worth.

Hi Bob-
I saw that “sold for” price too, but I cannot confirm its accuracy as I was not watching the auction live. If true, it’s certainly another aberration, the kind of thing that happens sometimes…
I’ll say I didn’t see anything “wrong” with the gun in the RIA photos, but IMHO Model 70 “Super Grade Carbines” are always suspect, at least of being non-factory upgraded Standard Carbines… Even if it looked 100% correct on in-person inspection, I agree with you that the high estimate was already on the upper end of its “value”… One thing is that RIA’s “price realized” on their website DOES include the Buyer’s Premium, but not sales tax/packing/shipping/etc…
But more than 10X high estimate??? OUCH!!!
I’m sure that the bidder who secured the Ulrich-engraved “RCS” 220 SWIFT that went 3X high estimate in the last RIA Premier Auction was NOT involved in this particular drama… Maybe the other bidder from last time found a new playmate to lock horns with???
Unbelievable if true!!!

Yes you are correct! This is the second time recently that an M70m has sold at an incredible price. An engraved one with considerable provenance sold recently for I believe right around $295,000. I suspect the same bidders were likely involved.
The rifle you mention looks like it might be in original condition. Hopefully Lou will chime in here.
I wonder if this might indicate a big shift in the value of legitimate very rare M70’s.

Looks like Lou beat me to it. I must have been still typing when he responded.

Yes, I was there. A phone bidder and an online bidder slugged it out all the way to $90,000. Here’s the crazy part: it was clearly described as a refinished gun. I have no idea what was going on but the folks on the phone bank and the auctioneer were having trouble believing it.

ETA Lot #3530 I’m wondering if I was looking at the wrong lot number. Lot 3529 was a 257 and not described as refinished.

Mike, The online description says nothing about it being refinished. States it’s all original.

My apologies, as noted above I got it confused with the next lot, Lot 3530.
