Bert has indicated that Winchester eliminated the tang sight mounting hole in late June 1943.
Actually, it was June 1942. The lowest serial number I have documented thus far without the tang sight hole is 1337730 (manufactured June 11th, 1942). For a brief period of time there was an intermix of receiver frames that were still drilled & tapped for the tang sight, but by the time serial number 1338500 was reached, the tang sight hole was eliminated on all Model 94 & Model 64 upper tangs.
Winchester continued to roll stamp the upper tang with the Type 7 marking up through serial number 1343183 (August 23, 1942) when production was halted to support the WW II efforts. When production of the Model 94 & 64 was resumed post war (on September 24, 1945), the upper tangs were void of any markings and tang sight holes.

….. which was my next question – thanks, Bert!

You are welcome.
For those that are interested, I have identified nearly all of the many different production changes that were made to the Model 1894/94 from September 1894 through 1963. As you can imagine, there were several dozen different changes that were made. Some of the changes were very abrupt in duration, while others took some time (a wider serial number range transition). Currently, I have 32,334 specimens documented in my research survey. I average 4.2 new entries per day. I welcome all Winchester collectors to contact me with any questions and participate in the ongoing research survey.

p.s. No, I am not going to post or publish the survey document… it is very simply way too large to do so. Currently, it would be 1,175 total printed pages!
