There are guys who have original factory roll stamps and proof stamps (or good copies), but they operate in the shadows producing barrels, often in rare calibers, that are used to produce high priced fakes that unwary collectors think must be factory original.  The fakers and their products have seriously impacted the collecting of Pre-64 Model 70s during the last 30 years.

I hope your intent is not to contribute to this problem.

Defiantly not….I have a pre 64 model 70 that was originally a 22 hornet, that someone opened the bolt face on and rechambered it to .222 mag….I have a benchmark barrel in the correct contour that I’m chambering in .223…Would like to get it roll marked correctly and get the 223 cal. marking put on it. I have a 22 hornet barrel, but no bolt,  so that’s out..

Hope this answers your question..Everybody knows that the pre 64 model 70 was never chambered in a .223…..

Not everybody.  Since the 223 was first available in December 1963 I can see a fake touted as a special order, one-of-a-kind, very expensive and very rare M70.

Some strange fake Model 70s showed up at auctions in recent years–219 Zippers, 32 Winchester Specials, etc.  I’m also aware of a 25-35 that appeared years ago, a couple of 35 Whelans and a 405 Winchester.  I’ve seen a couple of 7.92 MM over the years that were fakes.  Maybe there were some factory original rifles in these calibers but what are the odds of finding one compared to the odds of finding a fake?

I would surely think that before anyone would spend the high dollar amount for such a rare rifle, one of one in a cal. That probably could have only been chambered in the very last month of production, would certainly do their homework before purchasing…..By posting this question, it was not my intention to get into a pissing match over a .223 cal. marked barrel….But just the possibility of getting the Winchester marking and the cal. marking put on the barrel….Nothing else….I don’t need proof Mark’s or anything else…Enough Said !!
