And apparently it letters.  Anyone seen this rear sight before?  Thoughts/opinions (either the sights or the rifle)?

Interesting sight, never seen one like it before.  Would guess it would look like concentric rings closing in on your front sight when sighting down the barrel.

Not as regards that strange rear sight–it’s not a Lyman product.  During this period, shooting publications were filled with ads for novel “patent” sights; perhaps this is one of them–and much rarer than any Lyman sight.

Steve,

That rear sight is not in the factory letter.  It letters with a Flat-top sporting rear sight (22-C).  I have no idea what that sight is, or who made it.

Bert

If it letters as a Flat-top sporting rear sight (22-C), Then why does it say “U” notch”?

And not simply “Sporting Rear Sight”? Most Cody letters I’ve seen simply say this, that is if the letter mentions sights at all.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Brady,

Most of the sporting rear sight variations were made with a “V” notch, but on occasion, with a “U” shaped notch.  Some people preferred the “U” shaped sight notch and ordered it on purpose.  I have seen dozens of ledger entries that specify a “U” notch.  I have viewed several hundred entries for the Flat-top sporting sight.

Here’s an example of how the undiscriminating mania for “originality” can blind some to more interesting considerations, such as the uniqueness & rarity of this rear sight–maybe someone’s one-of-a-kind brainstorm. But not the work, it appears, of any amateur, but a skilled machinist. This vs. the garden-variety, ho-hum, sight specified in the letter? This sight should appreciably ADD, not detract, from the gun’s value…though it probably won’t.

Agree with you Clarence, whether Winchester or not, its unique, looks to be well made and thought out, and a bit eclectic.  Tastefulness may remain in the eye of the beholder.  But on a more personal and qualitative level, it speaks to the owner and in his own innovative way the desire to enhance the performance of the firearm.

The time honored cliche is that we wish our guns could talk…well…the choice of sights, modifications (good or bad), and visible use wear on a firearm are about as close as most will ever get.

It would be like a looking through a California buckhorn sight. Not a sight for quick jump shooting but target shooting.

Don’t know what a California buckhorn looks like, but the regular full buckhorn was always considered a hunting sight. In fact, it was one of the worst designed sights for any purpose, but that didn’t stop a good many retrograde hunters from firmly believing otherwise.

Great job Steve004.

In reading through John Madl’s article Model 1886 Carbine Research in the most recent WACA magazine, he list at least one carbine as having a Barringer sight.
