Using Kroil (penetrating oil) and a fine mesh copper wool pad will also remove the rust without damaging the surrounding bluing, and the Kroil is handy for many other around the house/shop projects.

“9412” was the catalog order number for a standard 20-inch full mag 30 WCF carbine.

What Bert said on cleaning the buttplate, Bud.  And do not clean all of it off until it is shiny…just maintain control/removal of any surface rust.

No, I do not.  I was expecting to see it on the subject box, and was somewhat surprised that it was not present.

Winchester typically put a 4-digit symbol # on the end labels to indicate the configuration of the rifle inside; I don’t know if yours is a 9412 or not.

The “Frontier Big 45 Pad” is the go-to product many people use to remove rust from blued steel. When used with a light oil and some elbow grease, it removes corrosion without removing the bluing. It cannot restore any lost bluing but will improve the situation.

Very nice Winchester 94.  My suggestion is leave the rusting alone if the gun will be sold, A high condition Winchester will be purchased by an experienced collector and they will have the experience in cleaning the gun and not destroying the finish on the wood stock, wrecking the screws or other issues you may encounter on learning to preserve a fine piece.  If you found a rare painting would you try and clean and refinish the painting or take it to an expert.  If you are keeping the rifle, take it to an expert and have it professionally worked on.  I have damaged lower conditioned firearms teaching myself on how to clean them.  Now I find someone that is knowledgeable on how to preserve them.

Awesome info, but deep down we are VERY different, I prefer MS Word tables instead of MS Excel for my lists. 😉

Thanks for posting your efforts!

Thank you all for this very good information.

i will heed your advice and leave it for some one else to screw up.  I am thinking of selling it to help pay for the AC on the house that has gone belly up.  I just need to move slowly and get as much smarts as I can.

i really do appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge.

Value wise that near mint and boxed carbine would go over the $3000 amount by a good margin in a good online auction like by Jack the Dog.

The “Transitional” Model 94 Carbines were manufactured from May 1932 through June 1937.  During that time period, approximately 28,000 Model 94s were manufactured.

Bert

Bert,

Of the 28,000 Model 94’s manufactured between May 1932 through June 1937, do you have a count as to how many were of the transitional configuration?

Thanks,

Al

Al,

All 28,000 were transitional Carbines.  The number I quoted excluded the Model 55, Model 64, and Model 94 Rifles that were also manufactured in those years.
