I just purchased this model 64 that I posted on here last week, I don’t believe it has been refinished upon close inspection , it has been drilled and tapped but I’m hoping that was done at the factory per special request. It looks like it’s for a type 21 Lyman peep site . I just filled out the form for a factory letter so hopefully that will tell me if it was done at the factory. The serial number is 1092215 .I found this older post of a similar model 64, serial number 1091802 with a type 21 Lyman peep site attached that was done at the factory , I will include a picture of that rifle also .Screenshot_20250104-095331.pngImage EnlargerScreenshot_20250104-095238.pngImage Enlarger

I believe that model/serial number won’t have factory config info, only its serial number application date/year, and that’s only if your 64 number is listed in the set of model 94 numbers. See the attached reference for what’s available from Cody.

Chris,

Unfortunately, the CFM cannot provide a factory letter for any Model 64 Winchester.

After reviewing the pictures you posted, I am 99.9% sure that the receiver frame has been buffed, polished, and reblued.  I also suspect that the Lyman No. 21 sight was added after the fact.

Okay thanks , I downloaded the attachments and the way I understood it was that that serial number was included in the list of 94’s but I guess I misunderstood it .

Also , how do you know that other model 64 , serial number 1091802 had the Lyman peep site installed from the factory if there are no factory records information on the 64’s ?

Thanks , Chris Screenshot_20250104-095208.pngImage Enlarger

Chris,

If you look at the left side of the receiver frame, and cartridge guide rail screw has been polished flat and is covered with bluing.  All too often the amateurs that call themselves gun smiths do not properly strip down a receiver frame before buffing & polishing it.

This is what an original finish & screws should look like;  Note that the bitter end of the screws are rounded… not flat like on your rifle.

Oh yeah , I see what you mean , as far as the holes for the Lyman site , how do you know if it was done at the factory or not if they have no record of it ? I noticed you said that the other one was from the factory in an old post ?

Chris,

There is no “positive” way to tell if the Lyman No. 21 was factory installed or aftermarket because the receiver frame has been reblued.  The fact that the bluing under the sight is consistent with the exposed areas points towards the sight being a relatively recent addition.
