I very much enjoyed the new calendar, and I’ll be keeping it in the clear cover for keeps. Plenty outdoors calendars in my house always that get torn and treated bad, and I’d like to keep the waca calendar out to view, but I often get old books & magazines out to reread and will do the same with the calendar!
But I learned something totally new to me, in it, the Mod 51 & new 27Win cartridge! I never had heard of this model of rifle, and my thoughts on the 270Win was it and the Mod 54 came into being kinda at same time and together, rather all at once, which yeah they did, but this shows Winchester work into the 270Win was well planned and thought out, just as the same for the Mod 54.
Myself, I growed up in 30-30 & 30-06 faithful country! My earliest knowledge of the 270Win, by memory was probably the 80’s?? And I knew it came out in the new Mod 54. My thoughts went with the mainstream, why a .277? But really never interested anyways, so never tried to learn anything, even tho by 90’s had friends using the 270Win some, but to me, yeah yeah so what! Until 3 years ago I got a used Rem 700 270Win, and then plenty research, loads, etc!
Now, although I’ve yet to even hunt the 270Win, I plan to this year. And it’s clear to me, that in reality the the 270Win may well be the most successful WCF Cartridge ever, certainly an over achiever really! Reading the conclusions of Whelen, O’Connor, Aaggard, plus an untold many more, it’s kinda the cream of the crop for one shot drt kills!
One thing I always admired about Winchester, is their way or no way! And their way sure shouts success in the old 270WCF! I never even considered it a true WCF Cartridge until recently! And it’ll be 100 years old very soon. I hope to celebrate it’s birthday with my first ever kill with it just in time!

Hi M64lvr-
Check out the article in the Summer 2022 issue of the Collector written by Dan Shuey about the early history of the 270 WCF. It was developed well before the advent of the Model 54 in 1925, although the M54 was the first Winchester Model chambered for it that called it “270 WCF”… Dan’s article even shows a picture of M51 S/N 1 that he/Brad got from Amoskeag Auction. I took the photos Brad used in the calendar…
The info we used for the caption are from Herb Houze’s “Early Bolt Actions” book. He says that the cartridge dimensions/load were finalized in December 1918. At the time its was just called “27 Cal”. M51 S/N 1 was built in January 1919, so it’s probably the first finished commercial rifle Winchester built in what came to be known as the 270 WCF. There were only (24) Model 51s built before the project was terminated by Winchester brass, so the cartridge didn’t really get any exposure until it was introduced as the 270 WCF in the Model 54. But it’s the same cartridge…
Best,
Lou

Thank you Louis for the info and heads up, I’ll look that issue up and soon get the back issue, hopefully still available! I was lifelong a devout 30-30 & 30-06 man, inheritance you might say of local favorites of where I growed up in the 60s thru 80’s. But I was always 99% squirrel hunter, didn’t really get into deer hunting and the rifles needed until 90’s! Haven’t been reloading but about 6 year’s and only then the 30wcf and 30-06. But friends have pushed encouraged me for over 10 years, “you need a 270Win!” That Rem 700 270Win fell in the road right in front of me, and I always wanted a 700, but never did, but it was in 270Win and hardly used. So I said nows time to get 2 birds with one stone!
So my 270Win interest are just begun, and I was fascinated with the Mod 54 & 270 cartridge story, and how the Mod 70 came from that! But the Mod 51 is all new to me, and can see plain now all that Winchester put into the 27 Win developing into the 270 WCF!
M64lvr, Being a member will allow you to view the issue online. If you go to the top of the page under Publications, click on Magazines and in the box, type in the issue that you want to view. With the mouse you can enlarge the print to be able to read a little easier, as it’s a great tool, our administrators have set up for all of us to use.
Great Job on the pictures Lou, in the Calendar of the Model 51.

Thanks Anthony-
Give Brad credit for the layout. I wanted something “different”. He pulled it off!!!
The T.C. Johnson patents related to the Model E were downloaded from the USPTO website. Brad is the one with the talent to “remove background” from the gun pics and overlay them onto the patent drawing. My Photoshop skills are limited, and my ancient legacy copy (so old that I bought it on CD) doesn’t have nearly the features of the newer editions…
