As I watched the Friday Rock Island Auction on Proxy Bid I saw them hammer a Winchester 86 at $1,025,000. A mint 86 rifle, 50 HV express, octagon barrel, plain trigger, fancy pistol grip carved style A stock, takedown, engraved $100 style #1. WOW, with the juice that’s $1,178,750. Did this really happen or was I dreaming? T/R
According to RIA terms and conditions they accept cash, cashier’s check, personal checks (with prior approval of RIAC’s management), MasterCard, Visa or Discover. Good luck with the credit card! Wire transfer makes sense to me. If you have $1,178,750. for a gun what’s a few dollars for a wire transfer. I bet he never shoots it! T/R

Talk about racking up some points on the credit card if that one goes through! Probably not a whole bunch of folks out there with a credit limit that high.

What an example of one of the finest rifles produced by Winchester craftsmen. Signed by Ulrich too!
Is anyone aware of another Winchester selling for higher than this privately or in an auction?
For the other Aussies on here, that equates to $1,657,440.38 AUD with the current exchange rate…

If I had that kind of money I wouldn’t spend it on a Winchester. For that kind of money you can get some nice real estate — significant tract of land, oceanfront, or desirable urban property. Just being realistic.
Plus, a lot of this stuff has been monkeyed with or “improved”. Anyone recall serial number 1 auctioned off a few years ago?
How would you like to spend that kind of money only to find out, down the road, it isn’t quite right?

Who said he bought only one? I’m just an engineer in Hollywood but around here I’ve known people who buy million dollar cars to add to their collection of million dollar cars.
It’s a different universe altogether when you’re buying in that class.

We could name a lot of names here, but who came to mind immediately was Wes Adams.

If it went on tour you would not be able to touch it. You could only tuck dollar bills in the finger lever as it danced by.
Used to visit those tours.

If it were mine, no one would get within arms reach of it to tuck those dollars. And I doubt even I would dance around it. Gracious, seems that I can mar a Winchester just by thinking about it–with only good thoughts!
