Here you go, Mike…I didn’t want to create a new thread…
I think you did very well for $2,250. How’s the bore?
Thanks! Yes, much better than GB on this one! The bore just looked dirty to me in the store but it scrubbed up and cleaned out nicely…it had clearly sat for a long time as it had just gotten dry and gummy. A little oil to the mechanisms and they slicked right up nicely. I think the bore is what everyone would call “frosty” but it has a little shine to it now and definitely defined rifling…all in all, a good buy I think.
Cabela’s FW has a second one that’s 2500 that’s almost exactly the same and a couple .33 WCFs as well… https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/101552496
Looks a little more red but they used some bright lighting for those photos, I think it could clean up nicely too.
Yes, the .33 with the carved buttstock! Both sides!

Ha! I saw that one a long time ago, it’s not in FW though….been listed a loooong time. I guess no one is interested in a place to inlet their guitar pick…
What about the ducks and oak leaves (?) carved on the other side?
Some rifles are clearly not collectors but make good shooters. I could not shoot a rifle like this .33. Aside from the intervention of finding a different buttstock for it, another thought comes to mind. Last evening I was re-reading Edouard Foa’s, “African Big Game Hunting in Central Africa.” An interesting thing he did with his hunting rifles was to sheath the buttstocks in steel. He of course was not hunting in cold weather

I don’t automatically hate an amateur engraved buttstock, it just sure won’t go to the front of the line on budget allocation….I’ve seen some interesting ones before that, if still attached to a nice looking gun, I’d go for it if not priced too high. All have been so far…
I’m with you on that! I picked up this Marlin 1894, 44-40, 28” barrel with homemade Art, looks well done and the gun was relatively cheap.

CJ – that Marlin is well done. Added bonus of 44-40 and a special length barrel. Plus, the work looks quite vintage. I probably would have gone for it as well. Not all homemade art found on rifles is the same however – that Cabela’s .33 being a good example of the other end of the spectrum.

Yes, I quite like that, and just like Steve said, the age on it and the fact that it took some work (not just brads nailed on) I think makes it interesting. Great gun!
Oldcranky, is that bottom one a short rifle?!?!!? Nice pair!!!
