Yes, it earlier production … but no special order features, not a desirable chambering and it’s a brown/gray gun. I don’t dislike the rifle (and I like the .40-82 cartridge better than many do) but I just can’t see paying anything close to this given how far it is from having, “condition, condition, condition.”
After $2777, ALL of the bids were by only two bidders, who in their testosterone induced “urination competition” were not going to let the other guy win. That ratcheted up the price to at least $5,000 more than that rifle was worth, in my estimation.
Where were those two bidders when I sold my 1886 in 40-82 a few years back? The one I sold had a factory set trigger and a really nice bore, and went for A LOT LESS than the rifle that just sold. I could have used that extra cash!

I suspect money laundering to say the least!

I messaged with Austin recently (He’s on here somewhere) and he said he has a lot of consignments and can’t take any more. I can see why! He’s clearly amassed a good following on GB. I watch his stuff pretty regularly.
I’ve watched enough of his auctions to know that Austin has a level of marketing savvy that borders on magical. His excellent pictures show things I’d miss during a hands-on inspection and his bidders trust him. That’s the only explanation I can offer for the premium prices his offerings bring. Austin used to lurk and occasionally post here but I suspect he’s too busy to spend much time here now. From his posts I could tell he is a collector and loves Winchesters as much as any of us.

Here’s an 86 about same condition, same cal. that just ended on proxibid for $2300+ 25% =2875, 1/3 of gun on GB Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle | Proxibid
Since I bid on that gun at 2250 and didn’t get it, I went to my local Cabela’s in Fort Worth today and got s/n 37551 in almost the same condition as Austin’s for $2250 ($2499 plus 10% off). I”m taking it apart for cleaning (It was really dry and gummy) and there’s some nice case colors still on the inside on the trigger, etc. Bore is cleaning up nicely too….$8k+ was nuts!
There’s a second one at Cabela’s for the same money…I should’ve bought it and put it on GB!

Jeremy-
I see you’ve discovered the Orphanage. I troll through there now and then and occasionally land a nice one. More than a few have issues, others are hidden treasures. Well done, what is the chambering of your prize? Pics or it didn’t happen!

HAHA the orphanage!!! It’s a .40-82 like in the OP’s post. Here’s the only pic I’ve taken so far during disassembly showing some of that color. (I”m waiting on a right angle flat head before I go further) Seems to be all there and only one buggered screw I will fix. A little oil and she slicked right up.

I think you did very well for $2,250. How’s the bore?

Thanks! Yes, much better than GB on this one! The bore just looked dirty to me in the store but it scrubbed up and cleaned out nicely…it had clearly sat for a long time as it had just gotten dry and gummy. A little oil to the mechanisms and they slicked right up nicely. I think the bore is what everyone would call “frosty” but it has a little shine to it now and definitely defined rifling…all in all, a good buy I think.
Cabela’s FW has a second one that’s 2500 that’s almost exactly the same and a couple .33 WCFs as well… https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/101552496
Looks a little more red but they used some bright lighting for those photos, I think it could clean up nicely too.
