I bought a US martially marked 3rd model Hotchkiss musket today at the local shop.  It is a mostly gray gun with an excellent bore but it is missing the cleaning rod.  I doubt I will be able to find  an original but at this point I wouldn’t know one If it bit me on the ankle. I would appreciate any information on these rods (length, dia., photos of the ends etc.).  It would also be good to know if there is a source for a replacement or a workable substitute.  Thanks in advance for any information.

I am sure there are a few who could answer your questions, but I believe the man your looking for is Jim Curlovic. I am not sure if you can look him up as a guest or not.

Hi Morgan. I dig up this old thread, but maybe you didn’t get any answer.

My Winchester-Hotchkiss M1879 has the same cleaning rod than the Springfield Trapdoor, but of the late model (trumpet-shaped end). Logically, I thought that the M1883 has the same cleaning rod, but its seems that I was wrong.

The M1883 rifle has also a M1873 Trapdoor cleaning rod, but oddly of the early model (Enfield style end)

You can find a good repro here :

Hope it helps.
