New Guy 1st post.
Recently acquired an unusual specimen serial #603890 that has several unique features. Is a 22 inch round barrel takedown that has the short 8 3/8” and narrow forearm. The (carbine style) buttstock is similar to the model 55 but the buttplate is a smaller WRA shotgun style. It appears to have period correct OEM sling rings that look to be factory installed. It has a shorter than standard mag tube 1/2 or 2/3 length. Sights look original and unmolested—Not drilled for reciever sight.
Take down feature is in good repair and functional.
If the barrel were a smaller “pencil” diameter I’d say it would be an ELW but the short 22 inch barrel is actually .705 diameter at the muzzle — more like a “bull” than a lightweight.
Probably was a safe “Queen”— Wood fit and finish are 90%—some typical bluing loss on the reciever from carrying. No appearance of any alteration or refinishing
Purchased off Gunbroker and really have no interest in selling—just would like some input on what you all think I have. Or at least how to describe it.

Welcome, Paul! I love pictures too! I’m thinking pics of the top of the barrel including the sights and stampings would be helpful.

Sorry Mike was typing that up while you were posting what I was typing……
Quite alright. I didn’t think about the muzzle and front sight. Good catch!

What am I missing, regarding the butt plate being a ‘reproduction’? RDB
Roger,
On the originals, I believe there should be an uncheckered border around the perimeter of the butt-plate. Compare the butt-plate to the one on this rifle listed on GI (photo # 15):

Thanks Bert — the style of the buttstock was in question to the local guys here who are fluent Winchester guys. I did find a photo in Rennebergs 2nd book on page 87.Would the original buttplate have been of similar style and construction ??
Paul,
The original butt plate was actually rubber, whereas the butt plate currently on your rifle is a type of plastic (Bakelite). The original hard rubber butt plates typically turn a greenish brown with age, and they get hard & fragile.
This is what a factory original hard rubber butt plate looks like.
