While a Colt letter is good to have with regards to Colt Cavalry and Artillery Model revolvers, a Kopec letter is priceless.  Here’s a particularly nice Artillery Model revolver I purchased a few months ago with a Gold Seal of Approval letter.

Nice gun. Mine is not as nice looking.  It has been used much more.  I don’t care if I have a Kopec letter.  It would be nice.  He explains the history of the batch of guns that mine is among quite well in his book.  Because of the rebuild it has a mix of inspectors marks like your Artillery.

I find this topic to be interesting. The Model 94 Carbine I had trouble with came from Merz.

The shotgun stock with the serrated butt plate and fluted comb weren’t used until the 1920’s when the Model 53 and 55 were introduced.  RDB

It is a lovely topic. It just proves even the most respected dealers can have/or do strange things. Recently saw an 86 at auction and physically held it in my hands. Had a broken shotgun butt plate and a giant chunk missing from the front of the comb. It appears it is now for sale in perfect condition for 35% more than it sold with the juice.

That fact needs no proving…esp. as regards Merz.

It’s fun to tinker with old guns. They are just gun parts screwed together. It’s not just gun dealers doing the parts swaps, one guy is parting them out and another is buying the parts and screwing them back together. That’s why I have learned to appreciate an original gun. T/R

When dealers do it, the motive is $ not “fun.”  Such as replacing rare sights with common ones.
