I have a 22 Hornet with markings PAT OCT 7 79, Serial #27107. I believe it to be a Model 1885, single shot, falling block but the barrel is not octagon.Likely a custom barrel?
A very few Hornets were produced, but yours is much too early to be one of them, so you’re right about the custom brl.
The barrel is positively not original to the rest of the rifle.
Winchester Single Shot s/n 27107 was originally manufactured in August of 1888 as a Plain Sporting Rifle (low-wall) in 22 Long (rim fire) with a 24-inch No. octagon barrel. Winchester did not introduce the 22 Hornet until the early 1930s.
Are there any markings on the barrel (including the underside covered by the forend stock)?
