Out of 2889 rifles in a survey done by Jim Gordon only 8 had 36" barrels. Most of them would of had a full mag but a check of the records would be in order to check the guns configuration for a rare gun like that.

Saw one at OGCA a couple weeks back had a 24" magazine tube that letters. Don’t think that one was in Gordon’s survey.

Well I see two mag rings, that’s a good sign.

Mag tube has been shortened, but all fixable

Beautiful!

I just saw a 36" 1873 mag tube for sale somewhere, I think? Or maybe it was WTB? No, I think it was for sale. Hmmm.

Edit: My bust. It was on this site and it was an 1886. Sorry.

A mag tube is the easy part, its the shortened barrel that is the tough one. You either have to make a new one or stretch the original barrel. Just depends on the amount of original finish

What caliber is your ’73? Jim Gordon’s survey does not list your rifle, but when added to the list it shows to be the third oldest one.

I think long tube 1873’s are about the coolest thing ever made. I’m the proud care-taker of my great grandpas 30" 44-40.

Agreed. They have an esthetic balance that says what they do: shoot bullets. Many weapons just don’t have that. I bought a used 30" 1873 .45 Colt Uberti because of that. It may be a $700.00 wall hanger but I can abuse it if I want to. I just wish I could afford a slew of the real ones.

I bought a Cimarron/Uberti 1873 30" 44/40 to shoot in lieu of firing my great grandpa’s and risking somehow hurting it. i’d never forgive myself if i hurt it. If i was rich, i’d be buying every cool old Winchester i saw.

I picked up an original 30" 44-40 1873 mfg 1880 at local gun show in the summer . There always a spot in my gun cabinet for long barrel rifles.

About four or five years ago there were several from different owners that ended up on an internet gun auction site and they were all the kind I like: very dark wood and very dark metal. The prices were reasonable, a little over 2k but I let them pass. Then, a few months later they showed up again with much higher prices, over 3k and they all sold again. I snooze, I lose. Embarassed

Just something sexy about the double barrel bands.
